Months of work came to a head.

It has been a roller-coaster ride for the DataMunch team. Soon after, we were accepted into the ANZ Innovyz START program. We registered our company and have been working away vigorously ever since. It has been a phenomenal ride!

Throughout the program, we had mentors fly-in from all over the world. They came into the program to spend time with the 10 companies that had been selected for their fast-growth potential.

The ride hasn’t been easy. We worked incredibly hard to get the company to where it is today. I believe that DataMunch is in a fantastic position to move forward, attract investment and rapidly grow – to make data easy and accessible to everyone.

Two weeks ago, I decided that Demo Day was a good milestone to leave the DataMunch team. The next 12-18 months in the DataMunch timeline will be primarily focused on technology development, based out of Adelaide. I have decided that travel is on the horizon and that the team is in a good position to move forward without me. As such, today is my last day with the team.

As I move forward and continue my entrepreneurial adventures, I look forward to the day when DataMunch can answer my data questions.

What’s next?

To be totally honest, I don’t know. I’m about to graduate from the Bachelor of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the University of Adelaide. After that, I’m keen to get my hands dirty. Whether it’s a gig at a kick-ass entrepreneurial company, project work, consulting, speaking or research – there are a number of options I’m weighing up. I’m keen to fit in a bit of travel too!

I’m always on the lookout for new challenges. If you’re working on or planning something awesome, and you think we should work together, get in touch.

On a final note, huge congratulations to the companies that have just graduated from the ANZ Innovyz START program. It has been an awesome ride – one that we’ll always remember!

The city is bustling. There is music and activity in venues all over the city.

In the middle of the chaos is a group of 10 startups working to a deadline – 18th April 2013. We’re about halfway through the ANZ Innovyz START Program. Week Six has come to an end and I feel we’re at a turning point. The DataMunch team is making headway and excitement is brewing.

The Past 2 Weeks at ANZ Innovyz START

Week Five was another jam-packed mentor wave. This time, we were braced for a tsunami. We were pleasantly surprised. Preparation and perception were key ingredients.

Week Six was entirely different. We spoke to potential customers and partners. We also launched the first phase of the DataMunch product. DataMunch is now offering instant access to Australian postcode profile data.

Check it out here. The team and I would love your feedback!

Lessons Learnt

Here are three lessons I’ve learnt over the past couple of weeks:

Perception changes everything – lesson learnt from ANZ Innovyz START mentors

Embrace “The Second Circle” Energy – lesson learnt from Patsy Rodenburg via David Griggs

Choose to Smile – lesson learnt from W.V Sugathapala (watch his video below)

Next Week

Next week, we have our third wave of mentors. Here’s the list:

Craig Mudge

Greg Siegele

Houssam Abiad

Written by liam on Liam Darmody - An entrepreneurial adventurer out to change the world..

Another two weeks have flown by at ANZ Innovyz START. It’s been absolutely mental. A week of mentors and a week of intense work.

As I’m writing this, my desk is covered in paper. I have notes everywhere. I’ve spent the day consolidating it all and finishing off tasks from last week. Some of the things on my list:

Re-write 2 minute pitch [DONE!]

Define desired outcomes for a week of mentors and meetings [DONE!]

Research and write terms and conditions for website [DONE!]

Write-up list of blogs, bloggers and websites to contact regarding DataMunch beta [DONE!]

The Past 2 Weeks at ANZ Innovyz START

Week Three was tough. It was jam-packed with mentors and the team was itching to get work done. Some of the team was sick and some have been juggling other commitments. We’re the newest company and the newest team, so comparatively we’re a fair way behind. The week reminded me of a friend’s description of TED: “it’s like having your brain pulled like taffy.” One minute, you’re pulled in one direction. And the next, you’re pulled in another direction. It results in this extraordinary ”Mentor Whiplash”. I quickly concluded that it’s all part of the program and it’s actually a healthy process.

Week Four has definitely been more productive. I’m feeling like we’re in a good space at the moment. We pulled through Week Three with only a few battle scars. We’ve worked on the messaging and the communication. We’ve put together a roadmap and have been working our butts off to get our beta online by next week. And the good news – I think we’re on track!

A Bit of Perspective

Since the start of the program, I’ve made a conscious decision to look after myself. We can often get consumed by what we do. (I love what I do, so it’s not hard for me to work hard.) However, if we want to perform at our peak, we really need to look after ourselves. I came into the program with the flu which wasn’t a great start. Thankfully, I’m healthy again and I plan to stay that way. While weekends have involved work, I’ve ensured to give myself time to wind down and relax. This weekend involved a fringe show, a night away and a day at the zoo.

First-time visit to Adelaide Zoo

Next Week

Next week, we have our second wave of mentors. Here’s the list:

Moira Smith

Duncan Hickman

Peter Saal

Martin Babinec

Brad Rosser

Audrey Melnik

We’re after three main things from mentors this week. All relate to our roadmap: advice on product development, market entry and investment milestones.

A small note to self for the next couple of weeks. I need to approach this entire program with a JFDI attitude. I need to quit being a perfectionist and Just F****** Do It!

Written by liam on Liam Darmody - An entrepreneurial adventurer out to change the world..

Straight out of RYLA and straight into ANZ Innovyz START. What a transition!

I couldn’t have asked for better preparation. Unfortunately for me, I came out of RYLA with the flu and was battling its effects in the first week. All that aside, the first two weeks have been exciting, intense, jam-packed. I have learnt a lot!

We’ve had workshops about how to prepare a startup for rapid growth, the importance of strong foundations around the Constitution, the legalities of the Shareholder Agreement and Term Sheet, and how to approach valuations for technology startups.

We’ve also been meeting with a range of mentors that have kindly offered to give advice and help us progress. We’ve discussed things as broad as customer segments, datasets, potential partners, competitive advantage, business model, pricing, path to market, marketing and strategy. We’ve processed a heap of information!

Over the last two weeks, we’ve done a whole lot of work and we’ve done a whole lot of talk, but we haven’t made a whole lot of progress. The motor has been in overdrive, but the wheels have been spinning. It’s been quite frustrating.

Fortunately, we’ve started pulling ourselves together. Yesterday, we had a meeting with a mentor that actually understood the “Lean Startup” methodology. He started by getting to know the team, our personal motivations and our personal situations. He probed and asked questions. He pulled everything to bits. He played the devils advocate and challenged every assumption we brought to the table. The entire session was engaging. He forced us to think outside of the box and prompted questions that hadn’t been addressed. Once he understood the DataMunch product and the current situation, he helped us construct a strategic plan with tangible actions. This was invaluable given where we were at.

Now we have a plan, our primary focus over the next two weeks will be execution. We have a lot of work to do but it’s exciting to be underway.

Next week, we have our first wave of mentors. Jana has selected a diverse group of successful entrepreneurs and businesspeople from around Australia and internationally. Here is our first wave:

Written by liam on Liam Darmody - An entrepreneurial adventurer out to change the world..

I’ve just finished RYLA. Last night I slept 14.5 hours. I was absolutely exhausted – physically, mentally, emotionally. It has been a challenging week. I laughed. I cried. I made some amazing some new friends. I have been challenged to open up and communicate with people on a more personal level, to talk about things other than work, to talk about my emotions and how I feel, to ask myself why I feel a certain way and do something about it. RYLA has given me a toolkit to be a better leader and to be a better person. I don’t know if I’ve realised all of the tools I have been given but they’ll soon arise. They may take time to surface.

Unfortunately I can’t divulge too much of the program. However, I’d like to share some quotes eight quotes and five leadership concepts that really resonated with me.

Eight Quotes from RYLA

“At the end of the day, all you have are your memories. If you want memories, you have to create them.” – The Hon Charlie Lynn MLC

“Leadership is the legitimate use of power to achieve outcomes on behalf of a group of people.” – Jock Cameron

“Cynicism is the cancer of the soul.” – Jock Cameron

“Not all values are equal. It is the job of the leader to seek the good.” – Jock Cameron

“A normal path of life will lead you toward self interest. We all need to consider an alternative – servant leadership.” – Jock Cameron

“Leadership is the art of influencing and directing people to achieve willingly the team or organisational goals.” – Stephen Tulley

“It takes immeasurable courage to investigate your own shadow.” – Phil Langdon

“You’ve got one mouth and two ears. You should use them in that ratio!” – David Murphy

Five Leadership Concepts from RYLA

Faith consists of the things in life we believe to be essentially true about:

Ourselves

Others

Life & its Purpose

We all have different preferences. It’s important to consider where we all lie on the following continuums:

The Leadership Motive Continuum: Leader-first vs. Servant-first

The Pace Continuum: Steady vs. Fast

The Orientation Continuum: Task Focused vs. People Focused

The Conceptual Continuum: Detailed vs. Big Picture

The Communication Continuum: Indirect vs. Direct

The Style Continuum: Introvert vs. Extrovert

Constructive criticism is much more valuable than positive feedback alone. This structure does wonders. Try it out!

The positive quality I see in you is…

And the way I see you limiting yourself is…

And the way that’s true about me is…

Structure for Constructive Criticism – Les Watson

Team formation generally goes like this:

Forming

Storming

Norming

Performing

The 3 P’s of effective teams:

People

Project

Push

Partway through the week, we attended the RYLA Dinner which gave us the opportunity to meet the Rotarians who invested their time and money into the program. The guest speaker, Kemuel Lam Paktsun was a past RYLArian. His story was extraordinary. He is a Federal Agent with the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and has had a diverse career working in the areas of International narcotic & criminal syndicates, people smuggling, counterfeit credit cards and counterfeit currency, taxation offences, major fraud, family law, computer crime, intelligence and most recently Counter Terrorism. If this is the potential of a past RYLArian, I cannot wait to see where this cohort ends up. There really are no boundaries!

To wrap-up, the team behind RYLA 2013 deserve a massive pat on the back! The amount of work required to logistically run this week of leadership development would have been phenomenal. Thanks for making this week possible. Thanks again to Hunters Hill Rotary Club for the sponsorship.

Off to Adelaide now. ANZ Innovyz START kicks-off tomorrow. Back to team DataMunch!

Written by liam on Liam Darmody - An entrepreneurial adventurer out to change the world..

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve read a number of reflective blog posts for ‘the year that was.’ I’ve always found it useful to reflect at the end of the year – before it all starts again. This time around, I’ve done a lot of thinking, but not a lot of writing. I’ve finally got around to writing something – so here’s my shot at a reflective piece for 2012.

In short 2012 was phenomenal! It was probably my most challenging year yet, but very rewarding. I started the year in Fraser Island, located off the southern coast of Queensland. There were a number of highlights in this trip, one of them being Lake Wabby – the island’s deepest lake.

Lake Wabby – Fraser Island

The year’s craziness kicked off with nothing else than TEDActive 2012 Full Spectrum. It was my first TED event and was absolutely fantastic. It really showed how big and inspiring ideas can be. TEDxMacquarieUniversity benefited from massive improvements in 2012 which I would partly attribute to the larger license and inspiration from TEDActive.

Danish Humanoid Robot “DK” at TEDActive

2012 was also the year where I made the bold decision to move from Sydney to Adelaide to pursue a brand new degree. I transferred to The University of Adelaide for a Bachelor of Innovation and Entrepreneurship. I was already loving the startup scene and consider myself an innovation enthusiast. So mid February, I packed up my room and headed off on a new adventure, via TEDActive in Palm Springs.

After an inspiring start to the year, I flew into Adelaide to pursue my studies. I had already missed one intensive. From this point forward, I felt like I was constantly in “catchup” mode. There were many ups and downs, many failures, but I can attribute all this to a sense of achievement – a sense that I have made it onto “the right path.” I succeeded in a number of areas. I failed in many others.

Lets start with some of the failures:

1. I partnered up with a good friend to submit a tender for a government project. We thought we had a good chance of winning the tender, so we put in a huge amount of effort to setup a business, design our branding and develop a website. The business was called Cinnovate. Our tender was quite extensive and we spent a lot of time putting it together. Unfortunately we didn’t get the job so we were left with a business and no work. We ended up using the business for a couple of projects, but the work we were doing was only short term. Essentially, our consultancy would (and should!) make our services redundant. A very good learning curve to ensure business is setup for the long-term. Cash flow (or lack of) can “kill” unfortunately.

2. I fell into the trough of sorrow with one of the social startups I have been working on. Unfortunately we haven’t made it out. You probably remember me banging on about RippleCrowd and a crowdfunding campaign that we were running. A huge thanks to those who supported us! Unfortunately, we didn’t reach the tipping point. We didn’t let that stop us though. We also entered the ZEN eChallenge in Adelaide. While we made it through to the finals, we didn’t make it out with a place. However, we got a heap of feedback from various judges and mentors of which we are truly thankful for. We decided to look at the business model more thoroughly. We’ve worked on the idea tirelessly, but unfortunately we haven’t made it out of the trough. At this stage, RippleCrowd is on hold and we may be cutting our losses sooner than later. Nonetheless, it’s been a good learning curve.

The Startup Curve

Thankfully, both of these have resulted in a phenomenal amount of learning and have been dealt with amicably. I am grateful for this because I know a number of people who have suffered adverse effects due to sour business partnerships.

Now, some of the successes:

1. I’m proud of the move I made from Sydney to Adelaide. I could have stayed in Sydney studying a degree that fulfilled nothing but a qualification. Instead, I decided that everything I do must be driven by passion and reason. It wasn’t easy – especially at the start. There were many ups and downs, but I’m loving the place now. A number of opportunities have arisen as I immerse myself into the startup scene and the studies are going really well.

2. I helped grow a team that pulled off a TEDx event 3x bigger than the year before. As a team, TEDxMacquarieUniversity raised in excess of $40K to run an event that would inspire over 300 people in person and many more online. A huge thanks to our Partners that made this possible. We curated an amazing lineup of Speakers and Performers. On the day of the event, we trended nationally and internationally on social media. We managed to attract a phenomenal array of people that contributed to the event and attended on the day. The Team deserves a massive pat on the back. Good job Team!

TEDxMacquarieUniversity 2012 Team (Credit: John Kwan)

3. I helped grow a team that has fostered a community of collaborators and innovators in Adelaide. Vanessa Picker and I were new to Adelaide at the start of the year, and felt that there wasn’t enough happening in this space so we started a meetup called Collaborate to Innovate. Huge thanks to Shane Cheek who sponsored us in the early days and a thanks to E for Ethel (previous venue) and Our World Today (current venue) who kindly offered their space to us. We soon recruited John Baxter and Petra Dzurovcinova, both whom have become great friends. Collaborate to Innovate has now reached in excess of 180 members and is growing by the day. John Baxter has been a huge help, particularly in the last few months where we have been working on building a bigger and better team, and a sustainable community behind it.

4. I was part of the winning team at Startup Weekend Adelaide in November. Quite a lot of traction came out of that weekend for a startup we are now pursuing. It’s called DataMunch. While it’s early days for us, there are lots of exciting things happening this year. I’ll be keeping you posted on that.

The DataMunch Team: Winners of Startup Weekend Adelaide

Some of the things I am immensely grateful for:

1. My family.

2. All the other amazing people I have in my life: friends, colleagues, classmates, mentors, etc.

3. The inspiring events I attended here in Australia:

5. The amount I have learnt in this jam-packed year. The learning never ends!

6. This list could be a blog post in itself. There are lots lots more!

So what’s in line for 2013?

I’m gearing up for a big year. The thing is, I need to cut the fat. I need to consolodate. I need to learn to focus and to say no!

I read a fantastic article recently about a man who quit being so accommodating. It was a “story of a man who found out what it was costing him, his family and his business career, to let himself be a universal Good Fellow, at the beck and call of every Tom, Dick and Harry who wanted him to do a favor.” An interesting read!

For me, this story emphasised the necessity of focus. I’ll be doing just as much work as I have done in the last few years (and probably more!) but I need to hone in on what’s right for me, my loved ones, and my colleagues.

I also need to quit being a perfectionist and Just F****** Do It! Alex Hillman writes about CTFD and JFDI here. In a similar vein, Bre Pettis and Kio Stark have written about The Cult of Done Manifesto. Both of these are great reminders to entrepreneurs about the importance of action.

A Regular Reminder

This year, my main focus will be DataMunch. In the first half of the year, I’ll be completing my studies at The University of Adelaide. Lucky for me, the final Semester is an Extended Project. For now, the travel will have to stop and so will the conferences. The rollercoaster is about to begin!

When will it all start?

On Sunday I’ll be attending RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards). I have been kindly sponsored by the Rotary Club of Hunters Hill. Judith Curtin – thanks for making this possible!

On the 20th January, I’ll be flying back to Adelaide to pursue work with DataMunch. It’s going to be a big year but I can’t wait for it all to start!

I’ve just spent a week in the Middle East. I visited Doha for TEDxSummit. There were around 700 TEDx organizers from 90 countries around the world. It was a gathering of like-minded individuals to share best practice and ideas worth spreading. We had the privilege to listen to amazing speakers and work with fellow organisers. It was an experience that was almost uncomprehenisible. It was an experience that I am finding difficult to explain. Here, I’ll give it my best shot.

TEDxSummit Welcome at Doha Airport

After a long-haul flight from Melbourne, I arrived in a country I had never been. Other than the welcome signs plastered all over the entrance of the airport for those attending the TEDxSummit, Doha Airport was like most others. Upon stepping out to board the bus for our hotel, things started to get interesting. Most of us were staying at the Kempinski with a few staying at the W Hotel next door. As we were driving to our hotels, I couldn’t help but notice the amount of development. There were high-rise buildings literally popping up around us. The architecture ranged from progressive Middle Eastern design to brilliant modern designs by world-renown architects trying to outdo one-another. It reminded me of the game Sim City where you are the mayor of a city with the power to develop and demolish. In Sim City, cash is king. Doha is no different. It seems as though their attitude is something along the lines of this: If you’ve got the money, you might as well get the best. As a result, I found myself thinking about the city’s sustainability. I am told that entire country of Qatar does not contain any source of fresh drinking water. To keep the city alive, a world-class desalination plant was constructed. In this country, oil and gas reserves are feeding the people and giving them all the luxuries they want. For the Qatari people, education and healthcare is free. Cultural activities are abundant. Life from the outside seems good.

As a high-profile brand, TED was sponsored by the Doha Film Institute to give TEDx organisers an exclusive taste of what Doha has to offer. I think it’d be safe to say that none of us were disappointed. One thing was for sure; there was no shortage of money. On the first two days, people had the opportunity to partake in a pre-summit activity. Some people did water sports and others visited Al Jazeera. Instead, I helped out with one of the action tracks.

TEDxSummit Opening Night at Katara

The Summit officially began at Katara for the Opening Night with talks by the likes of Hans Rosling whom I had the privilege to meet later in the week. As we wandered through the grand Ampitheatre which has only recently opened, it reminded me of something I would see in the history books. It was amazing! Again, I was struck with a sense of awe.

The next day, we were back at Katara for an early morning meeting with those taking part in the action tracks. I was part of Action 6: Turning Ideas into Action. We had a lot of work set out for us. The entire week was a mix of an unconference with best practice workshops run by TEDx organizers and TED staff. A significant part of the Summit involved interaction with fellow organisers, all of whom had one thing in common: TEDx. However, there seemed to be other similarities. Not only did people convey a sense of “craziness,” everyone seemed to be a connector. Everyone was well educated with a drive for continuous learning, and on the most part, incredibly optimistic. These people are living life with “No boundaries.” I love it! I feel at home.

Among other things, the week presented us with amazing opportunities to connect with TEDx organisers around the world and tick a few things off our bucket list. On the Wednesday, we headed out of the city for a day in the Desert. There were definitely a few uncertainties prior to arriving, but upon arrival we were pleasantly surprised by the village of tents that had been constructed just for us. We were even waited on as we walked in to find our regional tents. Funnily enough, the Australians shared a tent with the Kiwis and the Canadians. Not only did I have a terrific day of workshops, I had a swim in the Gulf of Oman and also rode a camel in the desert. I tried some traditional Middle Eastern food and saw falcons close-up. After dinner, we took our conversation to the fire on the beach. It was massive! What a day. And what a night.

TEDxSummit Closing Session at The Dome

After the Desert Day, it Summit went by very quickly. All of a sudden, it was the last day. An early morning meeting brought me to the Action Lab to wrap-up the week’s work on Action 6. Thankfully, it all paid off. The website went live at the Closing Session and can be found here. Kudos to Eiso and the team. Great to see a week of collaboration result in something tangible. Later in the day, we all attended the Closing Session with a great lineup of Speakers in the Dome. It was the formal conclusion of a great week.

To wind-down, we had a casual day out to explore the museums and galleries of Doha. We also took the opportunity to visit the Souq. All in all, the TEDxSummit was a truly unique experience; one that I’ll remember forever.

Written by liam on Liam Darmody - An entrepreneurial adventurer out to change the world..

As a returning Ambassador, it was a great honour to be sponsored by American Express to the second One Young World Summit in Zurich this year. To put it simply, the Summit was incredible! There were around 1,200 young leaders from 170 countries. It attracted Counsellors such as Jamie Oliver, Desmond Tutu, Muhammad Yunus, Bob Geldof, Crown Prince Haakon of Norway and his wife Crown Princess Mette-Marit among many others. The calibre of both young leaders and Counsellors was equally impressive.

My areas of interest are around mobilising business for positive change. I am particularly interested in strategic corporate social responsibility and am a keen supporter of service learning. These areas (especially business) were passionately discussed in depth and at numerous angles. It made for interesting discussion and encouraged the young corporates to think of ways they can involve their companies in socially responsible projects.

Having attended One Young World for the second time, it is really humbling to see the amazing work young people are doing all over the world. Youth are doing more good than what they are credited. The media must start recognising this! Young people know that the future is in their hands. One Young World brought this to a new scale. Other than the Olympics, One Young World brought together more nationalities than any other event. The cultural differences among delegates is astounding. But more importantly, the similarities that hold us together is beautiful.

The most important aspect of One Young World is ACTION! The Summit is a place for young leaders from around the world to gather and exchange ideas, however, it all begins when action is initiated. It is time for young people to stand up and take the reins!

What is your action?
